Our Laut Sahabat Kita (The Sea is Our Best Friend) program is an educational program aimed at Grade 5 students in order to increase their knowledge of their local marine environments and environmental issues. The program teaches students about tropical marine ecology, ocean connectivity and how people influence the marine environment.
The topics covered in this program include;
- Promoting healthy oceans
- Threats to the ocean and how to protect against them
- Seagrass, mangrove and coral ecosystems
The Laut Sahabat Kita program aims to cater for students at different learning stages by using various teaching methods and exercises, which promote reading, writing, comprehension and drawing skills. The program also includes a series of games and fun activities, which help to promote the idea that learning can be fun.
In addition to classroom-based learning, JARI also offers a range of snorkelling excursions, which help to reinforce students’ knowledge and create a deeper understanding of the ocean. We often find that many students have never swum, let alone seen beneath the surface of the water so these excursions are invaluable to developing students’ understanding of marine environments.
We rely on the assistance of community volunteers to ensure we can regularly run excursions as part of our program. Volunteers are trained by JARI prior to excursions and assist with activities, such as snorkelling, beach games, and demonstrations.
