Meet Australian Volunteers Program remote volunteer Nick Taylor, who has been working with Juang Laut Lestari (JARI), a marine conservation organisation based in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. ![]()
Nick worked with the team at JARI to increase their media and communications capabilities. Some of the projects Nick supported as an Australian Volunteer included re-designing JARI’s website, making it more user-friendly, and helping with the design and implementation of several major social media campaigns, including Laut Sahabat Kita (The Ocean is Our Best Friend) drawing competition - an educational program that aims to help primary school students increase their knowledge of their local marine environments and environmental issues. ![]()
“I took on the remote volunteering assignment because I saw it as a good opportunity to remain connected with Indonesia despite the barriers posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, as someone with a long-held interest in socio-environmental issues, I knew this was the right role for me,” said Nick. ![]()
“The most fulfilling aspects of the assignment was establishing new contacts and reaffirming existing connections with partners organisations and working with such a broad range of individuals. By doing this assignment, I’ve expanded my problem-solving abilities and appreciation of diverse perspectives.”

Exciting opportunities to develop Asia literacy and environmental sustainability education through the JARI Sister Schools Program:![]()
One of JARI’s most successful initiatives has been its Sister Schools Program which created partnerships between SDN 2 Sugian in East Lombok and St. Joseph Primary School in Crib Point, as well as SDN 1 Sugian in East Lombok and Lady of Fatima in Rosebud. The program aims to promote people-to-people links through language learning and cultural exchange oriented specifically around ecosystem and marine issues. Feedback from teachers in Indonesia and Australia has been extremely positive with teachers agreeing that they would like to further develop activities with their sister schools.![]()
JARI is currently looking to expand this initiative to other schools across Australia and Indonesia to help both boost Indonesian language and cultural literacy in Australia while supporting capacity building for local Indonesian communities through environmental education.![]()
